The Planetary Energy Consortium has suppressed a revolutionary power technology for over a century. The Protocore — a miniaturized power source capable of supplying unlimited clean energy to entire planets indefinitely — is locked inside a protected region of space called The Origin, powering a system that keeps everyone out.

The Origin is protected by The Event: a warp-pulse fired at 10-second intervals across a 1,000 AU radius. Any ship caught in the pulse has its cargo hold emptied and is ejected to randomized coordinates. No known ship has reached The Origin and returned.
